common rail motor

Did you ever see a big train coming down the tracks? If you have, you may have noticed thick black lines that run along the sides of the tracks. These lines you see are called "rails," and they are really important because they allow the train to carry things (in this case passengers) from one location to another smoothly. Well, there is also a type of engine known as a "common rail" go figure.

Many types of diesel-powered vehicles are equipped with common rail injectors. This includes cars and trucks as well as buses, and even some trains. Instead, they operate by using a high-pressure pump that forces fuel into something called a "common rail. Think of this rail as a large storage for fuel before it comes into the combustion chamber. The fuel coming out from the common rail is transferred to smaller parts known as fuel injectors. These ones are similar to small nozzles that spray the fuel into the engine's combustion chamber. This action is performed rapidly, hundreds of times per second, enabling the engine to function efficiently and powerfully.

What You Need to Know

One of common rail diesel engines' best features is, they enable vehicles consume lesser fuel. That’s because the fuel is injected into the engine at extremely high pressure. By delivering fuel in this fashion, it can be much more accurately measured and controlled, allowing the engine to better use the fuel. That allows for better fuel economy, which is a win when it comes to saving cash at the pump. This system also gives better control and timing of when the fuel goes into the engine, which can create a smoother operating and stronger engine.

But common rail motors do have their share of issues too. High-pressure fuel injection systems can be more complex to manufacture and more expensive to repair than conventional fuel systems. This means that whatever goes wrong might cost more to fix. Additionally, many of these common-rail motors require special types of diesel engine oils and other fluids that are not compatible with conventional engines. This causes the total ownership cost of a common rail motor to rise.
